I’m fortunate in my job to be able to travel to San Francisco from time to time as the company I work for has their main office in California. Just a little disclaimer, as this is a work trip it does mean that I get my food compensated after I return this doesn’t affect where I choose to eat or what I eat.
FISHWICH & SAN FRANCISCO CLAM CHOWDER served in a bread bowl
I was intrigued by the idea of a fishwich, the place we visited was along Fisherman’s Wharf where we noticed a queue had formed. The fishwich was around $5 and I ordered half a fishwich rather than full-sized. I was surprised at how big a half was! The sandwich itself was pleasant and different to anything I’d tried before. It was similar in texture to fish fingers and served with an American style ‘slaw. It was filling and for $5 you can’t go wrong.
Although I didn’t taste the clam chowder, I think this was the star of the show. From what I can remember it was a similar price to the fishwich (maybe $1 more?) and was presented in a bread bowl. I’m not entirely sure the difference between the San Francisco clam chowder and others in the US but it looked good! I know what I’ll be trying the next time I visit.
I may sound a little uncultured but I had no idea that California had their own garlic. You may think ‘Garlic and fries?’ But the taste is different to what we have in the UK. Garlic in Europe tends to be stronger and is an additional (sometimes compulsory) flavour. The garlic found in California is sweeter in taste and less overpowering. Added to fries, they made the perfect marriage of flavours forget ketchup a little drizzle of Californian garlic and you’re ‘good to go’!
The hot dog had to be done. An evening of baseball was screaming at me to temporarily adopt the American culture. I was a little disappointed with the taste, it was nothing special. It may have been that my expectations were a little too high and I was expecting American flavours dancing on my tongue but I think the real issue is that a hot dog is essentially a bit of rolled up meat in a bun with condiments smothered all over it. What’s there to be impressed about?

Wandering up to Chinatown on an evening after an exhausting few days in the office, we came across ‘Sushi Rocks’. Eating out breakfast, lunch and dinner with limited options for healthy food can be tough in the US and a light dinner option, such as sushi, was perfect. The bento box I ordered, had a bit of everything – rice, salad, miso soup and a choice of 3 sushi options. Not bad for $12.
It was a laid back, dining experience but you do get what you pay for. The food was tasty enough to be eaten but was an overall disappointment. Another slight niggle I had was the restaurant name.. I think it speaks for itself.
