Sushi Hiroba – My Favourite London Sushi Spot

Holborn is a busy business area of London with Covent Garden just a few minutes away the area get’s overlooked by tourists and you’ll frequently find Londoners dashing to get where they need to be. Once the clock strikes 12.30pm you’ll soon be in the middle of the lunchtime rush. Walking along  Kingsway, it’s obvious that Holborn is catered towards the busy worker with companies such as ‘Pret a Manger’, ‘Eat’, ‘Wasabi’, ‘Subway’ just to name a few. Nestled between the lunchtime food chains is Sushi Hiroba, a Japanese/Korean restaurant, different from its neighbours and certainly a treat.

I’ve been here a few times and every time I realise why I fell in love with the place with its relaxing atmosphere and modern classic decor catering both to lunchtime workers with sushi on a conveyor belt (how ‘Yo Sushi’) or for anyone wanting a relaxing dining experience.

For me personally, I always dine with friends and sit away from the belt, so we can enjoy different parts of the detailed menu. For anyone that has never had sushi before, the menu can be a little daunting as it’s filled with different options. my advice would be to stick to the belt if you’re unsure and if you know the difference between maki and sashimi to stick to the menu as you’ll get an-almost never-ending list of sushi.

I wanted to try something a bit different to the regular sushi so opted for the Alaska Sushi, a fried salmon roll with avocado and cheese served with house mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce. This was absolutely delicious. The outside was crispy and both sauces complimented the salmon extremely well. It was a delight to eat.

If you’ve never tried Maki before this should be the top of your taste list. Salmon and avocado is a standard maki dish served in many Japanese restaurants. A simple dish with wonderful flavours.

Spicy Tuna Maki

My personal favourite and the dish I always pick when I’m dining here. Although, I love traditional Japanese Maki, the spicy sauce that accompanies this is beautiful. It enhances the flavour of the sushi itself and gives an added sweet, spicy taste to the dish. Also served with the house mayonnaise which gives it a richer flavour.

Both dishes were so tasty, good-sized cuts of fish. Tasty, simple and delish.

Yakidori

Yakidori (Chicken Skewers)

Although this was pleasant enough, it wasn’t my favourite and was a little predictable, sticky chicken on skewers. My advice, stick to the sushi.

Sushi Hiroba is always a delight and if you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth paying a visit.
