After Work Dinner at The Lady Ottoline
I’m quite lucky with work when it comes to food as I work amongst foodies, (even though my job is unrelated to food) and after hearing good reviews about a fairly local gastro-pub named The Lady Ottoline we dined there one summer evening.
Dining with colleagues, means a lot of ‘umming and ahhing’ at others dishes. It’s one of the many things I love about eating with a large group; you get to see a bigger picture of the menu. The sole came beautifully presented and looked delicious. I unfortunately didn’t get to try the dish.
My dish of choice was the steak, which was the most popular choice amongst us. Although I can understand why the dish was served with a lone steak and sauce, I really wished that the chef still decided to serve each dish with spring greens and hand cut chips on the plate.
After an unappetizing start I thought we got over the worst. unfortunately the steak was charred too much and all I could taste on my palette was a burnt bitter aftertaste leaving me feeling like I had eaten a lump of coal.
The hand cut chips were the saviour of the main course and were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I also loved how big they were. I’m a huge fan of pub style chips and these were no exception. I’m not entirely sure how these were cooked but the texture was similar to the new chip craze – ‘Triple Cooked chips’.
The spring greens were cooked well but I really wished they had been coated in a creamy garlic butter. Afterall, we are in pub which is designed for comfort eating.
The dessert that everyone wished they had ordered.
My dessert of choice was a saffron poached peach with vanilla ice cream. A simple yet stunning dish that unfortunately was hard to eat. I had to ask for a fork to try and carve into the peach. The tiny flecks of saffron found in the peach sauce mixed with the creamy vanilla was beautiful. Sometimes the most simple dishes are the most exciting when done right.
Overall the Lady Ottoline was an enjoyable meal. I feel entirely let down by the steak which should have been the star. The clear consensus was that the desserts were far better than the main dishes but I certainly wouldn’t rule out coming again and feel that The Lady Ottoline has plenty to offer for anyone and is perfect for a summer’s evening.
