Unexpected Delight at The Modern Pantry

‘The Modern Pantry’ is a restaurant found in the heart of St John’s Square in Clerkenwell with neighbours such as Bistro Bruno Loubet and Sushi Tetsu, the area is a foodie’s dream and ‘The Modern Pantry’ is no exception.

Since the meal was a birthday treat I had a lychee, rose and raspberry Bellini to kick-off the birthday celebratory lunch and this was a delicious drink and perfect for a summer’s day, with sweet and sharp notes.

I opted for the scallops as a starter, and although the dish looked beautiful on the plate, the scallops has been seared too much. This fortunately didn’t impact on taste. Another complaint I had was the relish, although not terrible (in fact I quite liked it) didn’t taste right next to the scallops; two completely different contrasting flavours that unfortunately were too sharp and strong, and overpowered the delicate taste of the scallops.

An interesting mixture of flavours but still enjoyable.

My friend chose the corn-fed duck leg; good portion size and the duck was moist and cooked well.

Rose Veal Schnitzel

The veal schnitzel was my friend’s choice, but boy it didn’t disappoint. It appeared and I almost gasped in awe of how beautiful it was. The breadcrumbs were light and crispy that didn’t take away the flavour of the delicate veal on the inside, the potatoes were cooked well and the mustard sauce was complimentary to all the other flavours in the dish.

The only complaint was that there wasn’t enough sauce!

Pork Belly, liquorice puree

I was intrigued by the idea of liquorice being served with pork belly and although I’m not a fan of liquorice sweets, I had to try it – the foodie in me is always keen to try new flavour combinations.

The liquorice puree brought an earthy taste in contrast to the sticky glaze the pork was served with and mixed together was a very delicious plate of food. I definitely had enough sauce for the pork belly and I couldn’t have been happier with my choice.

My friend chose the ‘Bombe Alaska’, which again came presented beautifully. I can’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant to be completely in awe of how beautiful and enticing the chef had made the food look.

The chocolate mousse cake was light whilst still being soft and runny in the middle. The ice cream was creamy and the chilli caramel was sweet whilst having a very mild, slight kick. The gooseberries are a little random addition to the dish, but I still enjoyed them.

‘The Modern Pantry’ blew me away. We were initially intending to eat at ‘Bistro Bruno Loubet’ but unfortunately the restaurant wasn’t open on a Friday afternoon. ‘The Modern Pantry’ was where we ended up, and it was a blessing in disguise, the menu is vibrant, exciting and you are not left disappointed when the food arrives.  I’ll be back soon either for weekend brunch or afternoon tea ,which both sound promising.
