I’ve passed Banhmi11 a few times on my lunch break, and I knew once I was bored with my regular trips around Shoreditch, that I’d soon be visiting.
Located extremely close to Old Street tube station, it’s no wonder that come lunch-time, there’s a queue.
A clearly displayed blackboard with the different varieties of lunch options, such as bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette), bún chả (noodle salad) or cơm tấm (rice box), makes deciding much easier, along with an array of fillings to choose. Unfortunately, I was a little late and missed out on the cracking pork belly.
The displayed fresh ingredients, were exciting to see. I’m always a huge fan of watching my food being made, after all, I am a foodie.
I opted for the cha cha chicken rice box. Although the fresh ingredients, coriander, carrot and blue cabbage made the dish look inviting, both hot sauce and lemongrass dressings, were extremely watery. This created a blue (from the cabbage) coloured liquid resting at the bottom of the box. Not exactly appetizing.
In taste, however, both dressings lifted the dish adding spicy, tangy flavours. Although without either, the rice box would have been bland. The chicken itself was also bland and on the dry side.
Although lunch was disappointing, I’ve heard great things about the bánh mì that’s served. For the price, convenience and something a little more exciting than sandwiches, I wouldn’t discount Banhmi11 and hopefully the day I visited, was just an off-day.
