I’ve wanted to try Burger & Lobster ever since I moved to London. Food bloggers, critics and anyone who enjoys eating, rave about how amazing the restaurant is and now with a newly built Burger & Lobster right on my doorstep – Farringdon – I simply couldn’t resist.
We arrived on a Friday evening around 6pm as I’d heard the queues at other branches such as Mayfair could end up being horrendous. Surprisingly, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a table even though we were told it would be 30.
Whilst we were waiting I decided to pick one of the cocktails from the menu, the Clarges Buck Cocktail which was a mix of whisky, lemon and ginger. It was nice and refreshing whilst we waited but a tad on the strong side as I did have an empty stomach, nevertheless it was still tasty.
If you are unaware of Burger and Lobster, the menu consists of 3 items; lobster, lobster roll or a burger which are all served with fries and salad for £20. Depending on your preference, you can have your lobster cooked in two ways; steamed or steamed and then finished off on the grill. You can also choose your preferred sauce; plain butter or butter with lemon and herb.
I opted for grilled lobster with lemon and herb, butter sauce.
I was incredibly excited to finally be dining at Burger & Lobster and I just had to put my bib on as it was all part of the experience. However when the lobster arrived and I finally dived in I was left disappointed.
Parts of the lobster were overcooked the only bits that weren’t, were the meat in the claws. The lemon and herb butter sauce was also not ‘buttery’ enough to compliment the lobster. The salad was a nice accompaniment with a tangy dressing which was a surprise but really it’s just a salad. How exciting can it be? Another slight ‘niggle’ was the fries. At first I thought it was a quirky addition to the meal making the lobster seem a little more down-to-earth but by the time you’re ready to eat the fries they’re cold. You spend most of the meal trying to scrape every last bit of lobster meat only to find that you’re left with cold fries and a bit of salad. I also would have preferred something that complimented the lobster rather than bulking up the meal by adding fries into the mix. Afterall, on its own, the lobster would not have been enough to fill you up. Even with the addition of fries and salad I was left wanting more lobster for my money.
Even though the food was disappointing my dining experience wasn’t all negative. The service was exceptional, everyone we spoke to was friendly, warm and informative without being overbearing. My friend was feeling inquisitive and wanted to know more about the lobsters, if they were fresh and when they were brought in – note, the lobsters are brought in on a daily basis and cooked to order. We then ended up with the largest lobster of the evening at our table. In comparison to our tiny lobster, this was huge and I ended up instantly regretting the choice we had made. We should have all chipped in for the £150 lobster which, in my eyes, would have been a better dining experience.
Although, I’ve been critical of the food I wouldn’t pass up another chance to dine here again. If I was to re-visit with friends, I would probably opt for a bigger lobster from the ‘Catch of the Day’ menu or try the lobster roll but alas, it’s not somewhere I’m excited about re-visiting. ‘The food isn’t bad it just isn’t what I was expecting after reading continuous glowing reviews which is why Burger and Lobster is a restaurant that displays mediocrity at its best.
