Myself and ice cream are a dangerous combination. I’m one of those people who can watch a film with an ice cream tub and before you know it, the ice cream has miraculously disappeared. Häagen-Dazs is at the top of my list when I want one of those evenings.
The lovely people at Häagen-Dazs invited me along to their #realornothing event with Masterchef 2013 winner, Natalie Coleman, showcasing how easy it is to create ice cream in the comfort of your own home using only 5 ingredients; double cream, whole milk, vanilla pods, egg yolks and vanilla infused caster sugar (recipe video below).
We were first offered a variety of Häagen-Dazs to taste, with flavours such as salted caramel, mint leaves and chocolate, cookies and cream and vanilla. Having made my way through each, my favourite was the salted caramel, which surprisingly, I’d never tried before. The salty caramel chunks, were scattered generously around the creamy ice cream and as hard as it was, I managed to refrain from eating the entire tub.
We also blind tasted 4 different vanilla ice creams, giving us an opportunity to explore the different notes, texture and flavour of each. Most of the group preferred the second which was in fact the Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. It was however,a bit of a shame as we weren’t told the other 3 competitors, the 4th came a very close second, which had a more subtle spicing compared to the Häagen-Dazs offering.
The next part of the evening was the most exciting, as we saw Natalie making the ice cream. To see how easy it is, you can re-create Natalie’s recipe by watching the video linked below where she explains in detail the steps to make the best vanilla ice cream.
I had a great evening and after seeing how simple and easy it is to make ice cream, will be investing in an ice cream machine soon! Thanks to everyone at the event and a special thanks to Natalie, who made the evening even more memorable.
