When I saw the name of a new-ish restaurant opening up in Pimlico/Victoria serving burger and lobster (how original), and then adding a cringy adjective in front of it, I couldn’t help but want to erase it out of my memory. Who on earth came up with the name ‘Hardcore Lobster & More’?
Regardless of my peeve, when you work in Victoria there aren’t many places worth eating at, unless you want to spend a fortune. Even then, the constraints of having a full-time job with only an hour lunch, doesn’t help the situation either. So, it was only a matter of time before we swiftly made our way to the place. Afterall who can deny themselves a bit of lobster?
The reason for the journey was the lunch offer; £10 for either a burger or half a lobster both served with fries, a side salad or coleslaw.
The interior of the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired needing a good few licks of paint, new furniture and a cleaner aesthetic overall. As harsh as it sounds, a refurb wouldn’t go amiss but it’s probably unlikely if they carry on serving the food we sampled on a Friday lunch.
My colleagues are not fans of lobster (queue my incredibly shocked face), so instead opted for the burgers as part of the lunch menu. When you’re dining with others, it’s simply rude to ask for a bite but when you haven’t been asked how you want your beef cooked, I think it says it all…
What arrived was a poorly put-together burger with sides that could have been conjured in your own home. Who needs a chef? I don’t need to bang on about it but there are so many places in London that do great burgers (Patty & Bun, Honest Burger, Dirty Burger, MeatLiquor to name a few) so there’s really no excuse.
I opted for lobster and had a sneaky suspicion it was never going to be as good as the rival Burger & Lobster (a post from my very early days of blogging FYI) but it was worth a shot. In front of me was overcooked lobster that certainly wasn’t cooked to order, a claggy garlic butter sauce that again wasn’t fresh and an unimaginative salad.
Hey I know what we’ll do! Let’s buy some leaves, scatter a few tomatoes and any other vegetables we have lying around and drench it in balsamic vinegar. Job done.
Maybe I was wrong to already have an opinion before I entered the joint, but I do believe in giving restaurants a chance and unfortunately Hardcore Lobster & More went from bad to worse. On a Friday lunch, the restaurant was half empty and I can see why as it isn’t a restaurant anyone in their right mind would want to return to.
