I love Spitalfields Market, as it’s a great place to do a spot of shopping whilst also having a variety of different places to eat, ranging from big chains to some of the more smaller food outlets.
Scarlet Dot instantly caught my eye because of the strange concoction of bento boxes served at lunch and looking a little closer, the bento boxes consisted of either Thai or Indian food. The concept of serving two very different types of food, since both cultures use flavour combinations very differently, was a strange one and I couldn’t understand the decision to serve both of these together. As an extra twist, the dishes are then served in a Japanese bento box. Nevertheless, we were drawn in and decided to try the Thai/Indian bento box.
Both Indian and Thai bento boxes are priced under £10. I opted for the Thai box which had numerous starter and main course dishes to choose from and also includes a side salad, fresh fruit, prawn crackers and a choice of soft drink.
For starters, I chose the Thai fish cakes which were lightly spiced, crispy and with a soft centre. For the main course, I chose the chicken massaman curry and was pleasantly surprised, as the sauce had a subtle nutty flavour with plenty of moist chicken. The downside of the bento box was the salad, which was watery leaving a pale brown liquid residue and the rice was also starchy and not as light and fluffy as I would have expected.
Surprisingly, the portions at Scarlet Dot were generous and filling. However, eating out of a bento box with the food served, was awkward and I’d rather it was served on mini plates. It wasn’t the best Thai food, but for the price considering the location, was decent enough.
